In March 2023, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a comprehensive private school voucher program into law, enabling parents of K-12 students to receive $7,700 per year in state-funded vouchers—regardless of household income—to cover tuition at participating private schools. However, students currently enrolled in public schools are ineligible for the voucher program, even if they are paying for private educational support.

The voucher funds must first be applied to tuition, with any remaining balance allocated to other educational expenses, such as learning support or educational testing services. Unfortunately, since most K-12 private school tuition exceeds $7,700 annually, the new law is unlikely to significantly alleviate the financial burden of private educational support services for parents. Nonetheless, it substantially reduces out-of-pocket tuition costs for families with children enrolled in participating Florida private schools.

Additionally, the law introduced a new educational option called the “personalized education program,” which resembles homeschooling but comes with specific funding conditions, including attendance requirements and the completion of an annual student learning plan.
